Miracles these days?

Question:

Do miracles still happen these days?

Answer:

Every footstep, every moment of life is a miracle of astounding proportions.

We usually associate “miracles” with more overt events like the splitting of the Red Sea or manna falling from heaven. Yet G-d performs miracles for us constantly, and we hardly stop and take note of them.

The Hebrew word for miracle is “Nes,” which literally means “banner.” When G-d performs a miracle, it is as if He is holding up a banner saying, “I'm here.” Sometimes G-d chooses to perform some earth-shattering, nature-defying act, to demonstrate that He is indeed present and watching over us. But G-d has other, subtler means of tipping us off to His presence. G-d's dearest wish is that we should acknowledge Him not because we were forced to do so by extraordinary events, but rather that we recognize Him even in the most mundane. G-d wants us to train ourselves to observe Him in action through the means of nature.

G-d performs miracles for us on a daily basis. Every footstep, every moment of life is a miracle of astounding proportions, involving coordination between literally billions of processes. Any good fortune that we have- good health, a comfortable income, warm family relationships - is thanks to G-d's personal intervention in our lives. Sometimes, G-d chooses to manifest Himself to us in even more explicit ways: Saving us from near death or calamity; helping us achieve things beyond our wildest dreams. In these instances, G-d is not only bestowing kindness upon us. He is also giving us the opportunity to recognize Him and enter into a closer relationship with Him. That's why we celebrate miracles. Not only to thank G-d for His kindness, but also to thank Him for allowing us to perceive it.
