Mass Movement
The Nobel prize in physics for 2013 was awarded to a pair of researchers who in 1964 had predicted the existence of the Higgs boson, from which all matter derives its mass. Their predictions were born out in 2012 with the discovery of the elusive particle in the CERN accelerator.

A boson is any particle that bears energy, such as the photon or electron. The foundation of modern quantum theory is that the most of outer space, which appears to be a vast emptiness, actually consists of a huge, invisible field of energy known as the “Higgs field.” As the Higgs boson moves through the Higgs field, it is slowed down by its interaction with it, and thus acquires mass. Because of its critical role as the source of all mass in the universe, the Higgs boson is referred to by the grandiose title “the god particle.”

It is difficult to overlook the parallels to a far more ancient system of understanding the universe: “And the spirit of G-d hovered on the face of the waters.” Chassidic teachings explain that G-dly energy both envelops and permeates all of creation, granting each creature its unique form and function.

The current scientific revelations merely pave the way for a time when the G-dly force that brings all of existence into being will be revealed. These G-dly lights have long been hidden from us, although we could observe their effects.

There is no doubt that the discovery of the “god particle” is tied, in one way or another, to the revelation of our Creator within creation. With the true and complete Redemption, we will all merit to behold G-d’s full radiance, in the words of the Rosh Hashanah prayer: “And every creature will know that You are its Creator.” We will become aware of the force that brings us into being and sustains us every moment from anew. The curtain that separates G-d from His creations will be removed and we will perceive our utter nullification before G-d. However, the wondrous part is that we will be able to perceive this and still retain our own existence. For this was the purpose of creation – to enter into a partnership with G-d, to recognize Him of our own accord, while still in possession of all our faculties.

It will be a time of wonder and glory, when the full truth will finally be revealed – but something will be missing. Only now, in exile, do we have the freedom to choose whether to enter into a partnership with G-d or not. Once G-d is fully revealed in all His glory, what choice will remain? In this time of darkness, with only the dimmest awareness of G-d, we have the ability to choose. Now is our last chance to “buy in,” through fulfilling the mitzvot, and reap the full reward in the World to Come.
